The crosscut capacity question, and why most shops do not need the slide.
Verdict
The slide buys crosscut width and nothing else. A 12-inch non-slider crosscuts roughly 8 inches; a 12-inch slider roughly 13 to 16. If you cut framing lumber and trim, the non-slider is more rigid, cheaper and needs far less bench depth. Buy the slider if you cut wide stock such as shelving, stair treads or 12-inch boards; buy the non-slider for everything else.

You regularly cut stock wider than about 8 inches. Shelving, stair treads, wide casing and 2x12 framing all exceed what a non-slider reaches, and there is no workaround short of flipping the board and hoping the second cut lines up.

Your cuts are trim, 2x4 and 2x6 framing, or anything under 8 inches wide. You get a stiffer saw for half the money, and it will sit flat against the shop wall instead of needing a foot of clearance behind it for the rails.

You can cut halfway, flip the board and cut from the other side, but the two kerfs rarely meet perfectly and the joint shows. If wide crosscuts are routine, the slide is the tool for it.
The rails introduce a small amount of play that a fixed pivot does not have. On a well-made saw the difference is tiny, but it is why some furniture makers keep a non-slider for precision work.
A 12-inch blade buys vertical capacity for tall baseboard cut on edge, and costs more per blade. For most shops a 10-inch slider covers more real cuts than a 12-inch non-slider.
