What it does well
- Skin-contact detection that turns an amputation into a scratch. Nothing else on the market does this, and no amount of care substitutes for it on the day you are tired.
- The T-Glide fence is the good one. It locks square and stays square, and a fence that deflects is the root cause of most bad rips.
- Below-table shrouding actually captures chips, which is unusual on a cabinet saw and matters more than most buyers expect.
- Table flatness held to a 0.010 inch diagonal gap, which is the difference between a saw you tune once and a saw you fight.
- Gas piston elevation and a proper arbor lock, so blade changes and height adjustments are a one-handed job.
Where it falls short
- The brake does nothing about kickback. It detects skin touching the blade. Kickback is the workpiece being thrown back at you, and it is the more common table saw injury. Use the riving knife every time, use a push block, and put a featherboard before the blade, never after it, because a featherboard past the blade closes the kerf and causes the exact kickback it was meant to prevent.
- A brake activation consumes the cartridge and usually ruins the blade. That is the deal, and it is a fair one, but budget for it.

Is a SawStop actually worth the extra money?
If you value the outcome of one bad moment, yes. The saw is competitive on fence, cast iron and dust collection with anything near its price even before the brake is counted, so the brake is closer to a premium than a tax. The honest counter-argument is that the money could buy a 3 HP saw without a brake, and if you rip heavy stock all day that trade is real.
