How We Pick

The editorial policy for WorkshopCalc: what gets recommended, what does not, and what you can hold us to.

What we look at

  • Fit for the job first. A tool or product is only a pick for a specific use, such as a 120V compressor for a garage without a 240V circuit, or a rigid mill for a bench that can carry it. We size against the calculators on this site and say who a pick is not for.
  • Stated specifications. Motor power, CFM, capacity, weight, voltage and dimensions are read from the manufacturer's page and the Amazon listing. Where a spec is not stated, we say so instead of guessing.
  • Safety and standards. Where a standard applies, such as SAE bolt grades or dust collection duct velocities, we use the published figure and name it.
  • Owner feedback. We read verified owner reviews for recurring problems such as reliability, service and parts availability, and let them count against a pick.
  • Price tier. Picks are grouped by budget so you can see what each step up buys. A cheaper product is preferred when the more expensive one adds nothing for the job. Prices are shown as budget bands, never typed in as exact figures, because the live Amazon listing is the one that counts.

What we do not do

We do not test, run or live with the products we write about, and we do not claim to. We do not accept payment for placement or rankings. We do not invent ratings, reviews or testimonials.

What "sponsored" and "affiliate" mean here

Product links to Amazon and to Grizzly Industrial are affiliate links, marked rel="sponsored", and we earn a commission if you buy through them. If a brand ever paid for coverage, the page would say so in plain words next to the content. A commission or a payment does not change a pick, a ranking or a "skip it" verdict. The affiliate disclosure is at the bottom of every page and in more detail on the About page.

How products are checked and kept current

Products and specifications come from manufacturer pages and Amazon listings. We periodically re-check that linked products are still available and replace any that are discontinued or out of stock. Listings change after we read them, so every page tells you to confirm the details with the seller before you buy.

Update policy and corrections

Each guide shows a "Last updated" date, and the date changes when a page changes in substance. If you find an error, a dead link or a spec that no longer matches, send it through the contact page and we will fix it on the page. Who runs the site is on About.
