How this comparison was built. We did not test any of these machines. Everything below comes from the specifications Grizzly and Amazon publish and from how the designs work. Where a competitor detail is not in a listing we can verify, we describe the class of machine rather than guess at a number.

Hybrid versus cabinet

A hybrid saw takes some of the cabinet saw's design and fits it to a smaller motor and a lighter frame. The G0771Z has an enclosed cabinet with cast-iron trunnions mounted to the cabinet, which is the same architectural idea as a full cabinet saw. The G1023RL is a full cabinet saw with a 3 HP, 240V motor, a riving knife and splitter guard with quick change, a locking magnetic switch and a STOP paddle. Both have a 40 inch class table and 4 inch dust port.

Power is the clearest difference. Two horsepower on a 15 amp, 120V circuit is plenty for most hardwood work with a sharp, clean blade. Three horsepower at 240V and 14 amps is a different class: it cuts thick hardwood faster, holds speed through a dado stack and has headroom for wet or dense stock. If you rip thick maple for hours, the extra power shows up. If you make cabinets from sheet goods and cut hardwood in small quantities, you may never notice.

Reading the numbers

The rip capacities are close: 30 inches to the right on the G0771Z and 32 inches on the G1023RL. The G0771Z cuts 3-1/4 inches deep at 90 degrees and the G1023RL 3 inches. The difference is on paper only. The distance from the front of the table to the blade is 15-1/2 inches on the G0771Z and 17 inches on the G1023RL, which gives you a little more table in front of the blade on the cabinet saw.

Blade speed is the other surprise. The G1023RL spins at 4200 RPM and the G0771Z at 3450. A faster blade at the same feed produces a thinner chip per tooth, which can mean a smoother cut but also more heat on a dull blade. In practice blade quality is a bigger variable than speed.

What each saw demands of your shop

The G0771Z weighs 324 lb and the G1023RL weighs 508 lb. The cabinet saw is about as heavy as you want to move without a pallet jack and several helpers. The hybrid is a freight delivery that two people can maneuver with a hand truck. The G1023RL footprint is 20-1/2 inches square, the G0771Z is 19-1/2 by 21 inches, so the footprint is similar, but the overall working envelope with the fence rails and outfeed space is much larger on both.

Electrically, the hybrid is plug-and-play at 120V and can be rewired for 240V. The cabinet saw requires a 240V circuit with proper breaker and wiring. If you do not already have one, add the cost of an electrician to the cost of the saw. Check your panel with our electrical load calculator.

Honest weaknesses

The G0771Z's weakness is that it is a compromise: a hybrid cannot match a cabinet saw on motor power or mass. If you reach for a dado stack on a thick board you will notice. The G1023RL's weakness is that it has no 120V option, so it cannot go in a shop without 240V, and its weight makes it a permanent fixture. Both lists are honest. For the underlying type decision, read our cabinet versus contractor table saw guide.

Amazon-sold alternatives

The closest Amazon-sold hybrid to the G0771Z is the Shop Fox W1888, listed at 2 HP with rip of 31-1/2 inches right and a riving knife. For the cabinet class, the SawStop 10 inch Industrial Cabinet Saw with a 3 HP motor and 36 inch T-Glide assembly is listed on Amazon, and sits at a different level of price and features, including SawStop's brake technology. We list it as a reference point rather than a direct equivalent.

The verdict

If you have 240V, the space and the budget tier, and you plan to cut thick hardwood regularly, buy the G1023RL. If you do not, buy the G0771Z and spend the savings on blades, a dado set and dust collection. Either way, read our best table saws guide, the G0771Z review and the G1023RL review. Frequently asked questions

Is the G0771Z a real cabinet saw?

It is a hybrid with an enclosed cabinet and cast-iron trunnions mounted to the cabinet, but with a 2 HP motor and lighter frame than the G1023RL.

Can I run the G1023RL on 120V?

No. It is a 3 HP, 240V saw drawing 14 amps.

Which has a better fence?

The G0771Z lists a T-shaped front-locking fence with a narrow-rip attachment. We could not verify the G1023RL fence type from the information we have, so check the Grizzly page.

How heavy are they?

The G0771Z ships at 324 lb and the G1023RL at 508 lb.
