Bunk Bed Plans PDF

Twin over twin and twin over full bunk beds with a ladder and a bolted knock-down frame.

Bunk bed plans PDF for a wood bunk bed in two sizes, twin over twin and twin over full, each with a vertical ladder and a bolted knock-down frame: every rail end is held to its 4x4 post by two fully threaded 3/8 in bed bolts into cross-dowel nuts, so the bed can be taken apart with a wrench and moved. Dimensioned drawings, a cut list for every piece and a computed materials list, with guard rails on all four sides of the top bunk. Works in Microsoft Excel, free Google Sheets and Apple Numbers. A step-by-step Google Sheets guide is included. Two complete plan sets in one printable kit, ready to print and take to the lumberyard.

Who it is for. Home builders comfortable with a circular saw, a drill and a level who want a sturdy bunk bed that bolts together and comes apart again, know the top bunk is for children 6 and older, and want a shopping list for the lumberyard.

What is included

  • A printable PDF (US letter, 8.5 x 11 in) with dimensioned drawings, cut lists and materials lists
  • CAD files: SketchUp .dae and DXF drawings for each size
  • 1 editable spreadsheet (.xlsx) with board counts, a materials cost calculator for each size (type your local prices) and a guard and fit check for your mattress and ceiling
  • The worksheets again as printable web pages (zipped), so you can reprint single pages any time
Kids safety: please read before you buy. Bunk beds can cause serious injury or death from falls, from a child getting trapped in a gap (entrapment) and from cords or ropes (strangulation). The top bunk is not for children under 6. These plans have not been tested or certified to the US bunk bed rule (16 CFR 1513) or ASTM F1427, and a homemade bunk bed is not a tested product. The plans are built around those dangers: guard rails on all four sides of the top bunk, no opening of 3-1/2 in or more in the guard, a 14 in entry opening, a mattress limit of 8 in, rounded edges, bed bolts with every bolt head sunk and plugged, and a bed anchored to the wall. If you are not confident building furniture a child will sleep on, buy a certified bunk bed instead. Always supervise young children.

Please note. This is a digital download, no physical item ships. These are generic DIY plans, not engineered or stamped drawings, and the bed has not been tested or certified to any standard. The top bunk is not for children under 6. Follow every safety rule in the plans, check your local rules, anchor the bed to the wall, and check it every month. The builder is responsible for safe construction and use. Colors can look a little different on your screen and printer. For personal use only; please do not resell or share the files.
