A disc sander spins a round abrasive disc on a backing plate, so its speed is fastest at the outer edge and it excels at squaring and smoothing the ends of a workpiece against its table and miter gauge.
Use a belt sander when you need to remove a lot of stock quickly, flatten a wide face, sand a long edge, or shape curves on the belt platen. Its continuous linear motion follows the grain and covers more surface per pass than a disc, which makes it the better choice for rough shaping and knocking down high spots before final smoothing.
